lost 'n' foggy on the great highway.

forever searching, searching for something you'll never find.
peaceful bird lands on your shoulder.
the wind in your hair tonight.
a sound somewhere no one understands but you.

the street seems hot tonight, though I know it's not.
white lights in the distance.
thunder coming minutes later.
you're rip van winkle again this night.
sven.

a wonderful movie about the way life should be.
when I watch 'harold and maude' I feel happy.

that's all she wrote.
good night.

nicollet island.

photos from a recent drive around nicollet island. what a neat neighborhood. amongst other things - the home of the iconic grain belt beer sign (some day a picture? - ed.) a historic and 'kinda funky'  neighborhood of minneapolis.
the neighborhood holds some personal history for me as well. an occasional 'hang out' for me in the old days, was a decrepit secluded train bridge on the northwest side of the island. it has since been restored and is now part of the parks system. at the time it was more likely to 'transport' transients, and other malcontents.
to this off the radar hangout, I took my future wife on the day we met, more than 26 years ago. I ran across her not far from here, just across the river at bristols (no longer extant) (not more than a stone's throw from nye's, by the way) I invited her for a ride on my motor bike. we stopped at a liquor store, picked up a 6 pack of beer, and went to the bridge for some summer fun (very trusting she was - ed.) 10 weeks later we were married. as I said, historic.

one of the buildings on the island has an orb behind it. a space capsule or some kind of weird and wonderful art piece. mysterious. anyone? guess I'll have to investigate further. building looks pretty cool too.

incongruous shoes.

an incongruous sight, I didn't need to wonder long whether or not I should snap this pic. these shoes were (seemingly) abandoned on lake st. in s. minneapolis outside ingebretsen's on my last trip there. (or, maybe the owner is living a kind of minimalist life style. he returns for his shoes when he needs them, if they are not there, he didn't need them? - ed.)
ingebretsen's seems more than a little incongruous (in it's location) too. the market was opened in 1921 and has been run by the ingebretsen's since. hoot, who just passed away last year, ran it for many of the last 50 years. the neighborhood has completely 'morphed' around them like something out of the film 'being there' (excellent - ed.) a fine scandinavian market, part gift shop, part wonderfully pungent deli. it's always a treat to visit.

nye's polonaise room.

I have been to the bar next door (nye's bar) many times over the years. and have even 'remotely' seen the 'world's most dangerous polka band' over there. this snapshot was taken this past december in the adjoining polonaise room, where polish is the specialty of the house. we celebrated with white russians and enjoyed the perfect vibe.

pierogis, sausage, kraut. it was a very nice dinner.

master of time and space.

leon russell. cedar cultural center. w. bank, minneapolis. august 29, 2012.
(iphone)

before the show that evening I stopped at palmer's for a drink. I have seen this place a million times but never gone in. it was kind of a treat. they were having an open jam. several old hippies, and some young ones, sat 'round an ancient oak table and boozily bashed out old songs in a rough and ready fashion. if the walls of this 'joint' could talk...
the show: wow. I own many leon russell albums and have always liked his music, but have never seen him...until now. what a wonderful show in a cool little venue. if the opportunity ever again presents itself I won't miss leon...master of time and space.
