desitively bonnaroo.

lauren, reggie, cc

before he left for bonnaroo my son and I were watching some videos of last year's festival together. and we watched a couple  with reggie watts. I was joking around about not liking the look of this fellow and forbade him from hanging out with him, that was my only rule. one far fetched - impossible to break rule... you only had one rule for bonnaroo and you break it? that's very funny - happy father's day indeed.

johnny taylor and the ultimates.

johnny taylor and the ultimates do a tasty rendition of the doors' 'light my fire' one lovely san francisco afternoon. I could have stayed all day, instead for a few brief but sublime moments I find myself floating along - aboard some astral ship bound for who knows where? I know I don't have to worry, I trust johnny and the boys. I know it and they know I know it. right now we can't stay...  don't they know what me and johnny know?

guess that's just how we communicate, johnny and me, though I don't even know him. music is just one of the most important forms of communicating I think. I don't know much about johnny, but I know one of the languages he speaks... I speak it too. so we must have something in common, right? I especially love the language itself, so ambiguous, yet so pure some how.
oh by the way, the aforementioned group name is just what I would advise them to be called if I were their manager 'cause I've no idea who they were, only that they were excellent.  I hope I get to see them again sometime, if I do this time I'll simply insist we stay much longer, for something so important: a few peaceful moments groovin' with johnny.

city and country.

I had to go the big city yesterday, there were not too many people out and about. these are some of the skyscrapers there. below, see the hennepin co. library with several tall buildings behind, including the ids tower. the ids was the only tall building in minneapolis for many years giving the downtown area a very distinct look. it's definitely changed over the years...

I worked for 2 years at the top of the ids, at the orion room / cleos. it was kind of a hassle to come and go, but it was a really cool place to work. years and years ago this was... there was quite the cast of characters working there at the time.
cathy the dishwasher in the elevator after work: beautiful people who have just had very expensive dinner and drinks are now traveling with the person who's still sweating from washing their dishes. she was a little indifferent to the other passengers as she used to click her jaw madly to assuage the pressure in her ears from the ride down.
lori barbero: lori was a very nice girl and definitely tough. she would come to work dressed very punk and transform herself (as much as possible) for the floor. one night a british band, 'the lime spiders' came to 1st avenue. lori (and I, but not with lori) attended - and left with the boys on their bus after the show. no more lori. next thing I heard of her was that she was the drummer for 'babes in toyland'
several other musicians, artists, actors and dancers worked in a tiny back of the house / kitchen, that I always thought of as like being in a submarine perched high in the sky. it was a very interesting place.

every once in awhile, late at night after work was done: mix a drink, turn on the 'oldies' channel, go into one of the smaller rooms, turn off lights, enjoy. beautiful.

here's the armory. I saw a few concerts there. It's acoustics are not good but this is my kind of venue. I wish all indoor concerts were held at venues like this. I just much prefer the old school - industrial - utilitarian vibe of an old civic center, to these modern 'softeez toilet paper center' joints.
70's concerts: $8-$10, mostly kids, a cloud of smoke fills the 'sky' for the evening. bottles and frisbees flying around. halls filled with colorful long haired kids in various states of buzzed. fire crackers and rock music blasting. fun.
in august 1978 I drove my '67 fury III from stacy to blaine, where I picked up greg marx. his father was a strict authoritarian and their family was run in a very unhappy manner. the family was basically doing homesteader stuff: big garden, everything home made etc. that day his father had ordered him to return a rabbit to the wild of my house before he could go anywhere else. he agreed and we set off, 15 blocks further and it was freedom for blinky the bunny into the nearest field we could find.
then we took off for bloomington to see my 1st concert: the eagles, steve miller band and pablo cruise at the old met stadium (current site: mall o' america), tickets were $10. the attendance for this show was a record 80,000 outside in the pouring rain that only let up towards the end of the night. I more or less purposefully 'got seperated' from greg at the beginning of the show and spent the rest of the night 'alone' with 80,000 other revelers... there's parts to this story that can't be told here, what with this being a family operation and all...     ...quite the introduction to concerts for me.

when I came back to the country this is what I saw:
a cardinal, perched in the blue spruce next to our house.

I like the city.
I like the country.

what we did on our holidays.

last fall crosby stills nash played 2 nights at the fillmore in san francisco california
and I was invited to come and see them by my super cool sister and her super cool husband.
if you have been to the fillmore then you know what a world class experience it is to see a show there. these shows were certainly no exception.  one band, two sets of jubilantly presented aural touchstones. as usual, solo and duo work were featured throughout the shows. an ecstatic home crowd pulled for the team in it's crazy bleary fashion - adding that mysterious '4th member' to the band.

my iphone (and photographer? - ed.) showing it's limitations these nights. these are the best.

'we do our best with what we have'

crosby's beautiful alembic guitar.

from here to venezuela.
there's nothing more to see.
than a hundred thousand islands.
flung like jewels upon the sea.
for you and me.

don't you ever ask them why.
if they told you.
you would cry.

crunch.

baahaah.

moooo.

hey lady don't forget your poster.

what super fun 'n' groovy shows. if you're ever in san francisco california, look up the fillmore (though to be precise this isn't the 'good old fillmore west'. - ed.) and go see that in-famous rockin' combo: crosby stills nash. I'm sure you'll agree they're really boss. thanks sis and co. thank you for the days.

white bears.

my field trip to see a play and eat and drink in wonderful white bear lake minnesota!
by sven

a friend of a friend is currently playing florence unger in the 'the odd couple (female version)', at the lakeshore players theatre in white bear lake minnesota. we agreed to go. with tickets purchased and plans made and extensive preparations completed, the night began...

the first things I encountered were pretty rural scenes...

I see the ice is still holding up:

a short hop, skip and a jump through lovely centerville minnesota and I arrived at my destination:
white bear lake minnesota to eat and drink and see a play!

in white bear lake there is a special down town area with lots of good shops and delicious food purveyors and libations experts. there is a nice home town feel in white bear lake, and everyone seemed very pleasant and happy you were there. and I was happy to be there.
I started out my evening arriving earlier then planned. I went into the cozy and venerable 617 cocktail lounge, so named for it's former and original address, same location, different address...don't ask.

having wanted to come here for years, I finally made it. I order a drink and retire to one of the over-sized booths. it is a good place to while away the hours. hmmm, not sure how to describe the decor, a classic 60s lounge for sure, it's a melange of nautical, english tudor and modern? the service was very friendly and efficient, the drinks very good and the locals welcoming. I wouldn't change a thing at the 617 cocktail lounge!
after, I went next door to truly, a really nice gift shop. gretchen, the lady in the shop, was nice to me and answered all of my questions even though I had interrupted her dinner of french toast! I enjoyed asking her about the local artists they feature in truly so much I forgot to take any pictures! next time. gretchen, who lives 6 blocks away from truly, seems to embody the 'feel' of white bear lake, they seem to know some secret. well, I won't spoil it for them!
I did see something in white bear lake I had never seen before...a bird aviary in the waiting room of a dentist...I guess it helps to calm the patients.

?

...but then it was off around the corner to...washington square!

my dinner of fish tacos with corn tortillas, beans, rice, fresh onions, cilantro, lime, really nice fruit salsa and guacomole was excellent! and the folks I was with seemed to agree. we like it here at washington square!
our only complaint was being seated in some kind of 'adjunct' room. the main areas were really hopping with all kinds of glamorous white bear lakians, but not ours. I never had to go to school in one of those prefab trailers, the kind I see nowadays around some of the local schools, who's student body has out grown the main school. I always wondered if that wouldn't be a little disconcerting, now I think I know what it's like. oh well the room wasn't too bad, I just like being 'where the action is'! tip: opt out if given your druthers.
then, a little while later we drove exactly 6 blocks to the theatre, a neat little converted church. the play took a little to get warmed up, but then the cast really came through. cindy was very good as the florence character and so was the rest of the cast. well done.

bravvoo!

as you know dear listener, all good things must come to an end. but all in all it was a fine night, full of heartfelt conversation, good food, libations, performances and oh...don't forget wonderful white bear lake!

whew! back in good old columbus, good night!

rock 'n' roll all night.

def leppard.

def leppard, poison, lita ford concert.
sleep train, bay area.

(iphone, preview, september 2012)

our hero with some heavy metal kids after the show. our seats, 20th row center, took a loud smiting from thor's mighty hammer, if you catch my meaning. the first night of my visit to san francisco was long. we caught the last bus back to bart. bart broke down so we hopped off in oakland somewhere and blearily searched the streets for a taxi. he transported us to an ihop (or something?) for a late night breakfast. nothing ever tasted better.
one of our party was a young black woman whom we had met earlier on the bus to the show. my sister persuaded her to accompany us when we got off the broken train. she thought for a moment...and came with us. (very trusting she was - ed.) I think I ended up being up (with the time difference) for 30 hours. sure was fun. thanks again sis.

master of time and space.

leon russell. cedar cultural center. w. bank, minneapolis. august 29, 2012.
(iphone)

before the show that evening I stopped at palmer's for a drink. I have seen this place a million times but never gone in. it was kind of a treat. they were having an open jam. several old hippies, and some young ones, sat 'round an ancient oak table and boozily bashed out old songs in a rough and ready fashion. if the walls of this 'joint' could talk...
the show: wow. I own many leon russell albums and have always liked his music, but have never seen him...until now. what a wonderful show in a cool little venue. if the opportunity ever again presents itself I won't miss leon...master of time and space.
